12/15/04 Joel Wiersema - Living in downtown Chicago, why Gallagher the comedian is so smart, his niche for Choreographing, why NOT to bring cameras in public malls, and how 'In Living Color' affected his life.

ES: Where do you reside?
JW: I currently live in a dorm on the corner of Harrison and Halsted in practically downtown wonderful (cooler that O-town) Chicago! WITH a nice view of the Sears tower from my bed.

ES: What makes you money today?
JW: Well since I'm in school here at UIC, my income is in the negatives. But I am currently doing sound design for the Chicago Civic Ballot production of The Nutcracker...So that's pretty nice.

ES: What is your title, what do you do, and where?
JW: My title is Sound Designer and Sound Board Operator. I should probably be under "Choreographers" too, because of all my moves and flip around thingys I showed them, but I don't want my name all over that program like I'm some kind of show off.

ES: What time do you wake up & what's the first thing you do?
JW: Well Mondays Wednesdays Fridays I get up at exactly 9:21, Tuesday and thurdays I'm up at 8:21 and Saturday and Sunday is around 10. The first thing I do ALWAYS, is try to hide my morning wood from my roommate. Then I always take a shower. Shower gotta be first or else the rest of the day is messed up!

ES: What do you do in your spare time?
JW: I'm usually always busy with something. It's school during the day, rehearsals and techs in the evenings, and homework at night, then Family Guy at 10:30, then talk to Adrienne on the phone, then bed. So i don't really stop, I have a full schedule.

ES: What's in your cd player right now?
JW: The new Brian Wilson SMILE album, The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the other CD spot is open for rotation. 2 of my top 5 favorites and a spot for those impulse discs.

ES: What's your favorite website and why? (Eric-Sharp.com is not electable)
JW: I'd say eBay.com. Gotta love the deals and cheap prices. I don't freetime surf often. The site I go to most is Yahoo.com for my e-mail.

ES: List a few of your short term goals. (Travel, career, personal, etc.)
JW: I have to hang some overhead microphones tomorrow and I need to be organized and efficient. I need to study for finals this week. I need to help Eric check into the Special Ed for Special Kids Institute and Veterinary Clinic. I need to get stuff together to bring home for break. I'll probably need to poop soon.

ES: If you could spend a day with anyone in the world (living), who would it be and why?
JW: I would hang out with Gallagher the comedian. He's so smart! His stand up comedy is so insightful and makes you think. Then we could make dinner together. And smash it with the Sledge-O-Matic.

ES: Favorite movies of all time?
JW: Tommy Boy, JFK, Capturing the Friedmans, any by Michael Moore, West Side Story, Oklahoma!, (Annette reminded me of...) Goonies, American History X, any National Lampoon Vacation films, all documentaries.

ES: If you were given the power to either fly (45 mph max), or become invisible for a designated duration of 30 minutes every day, which one would you choose & why?
JW: I would totally Fly! You can always use that. My favorite radio show 'This American Life' addressed this issue. thislife.com Show #178 Superpowers. This is a quote from this humorous, but very serious and creditable show... "Flying is for people who want to let it all hang out and invisibility is for fearful crouching masturbators." This show does not insult or endorse either idea, it's just interviews of people and their opinions. It's really a great show. While their quote does make invisibility sound good, I'd still pick flying. (traffic, traveling, chase Peter Pan, point & laugh at Batman).

ES: Have you ever been arrested? If so, what for?
JW: Yes, yes I have. I was arrested at the mall in Sterling IL. Technically it was "Criminal Trespass." The lady at the Claires girlie crap store said that she told us to leave the property and we returned. Those are grounds for arrest. Were we guilty. Well, the short answer 'Yes' with a 'but..' and the long answer 'No' with an 'except'. We had been there before and joked around with her before and we gave each other a hard time about getting kicked out. Then one day we went in there and she got mad and called the Pigs! Now, another almost useless detail is that me and my buddy had a video camera and we were being funny. Don't judge me, ok. I did my community service, Ok!?! (sentenced to 20, only did 7) I cleaned the exterior and interior of EVERY bus and van at the Sterling Self Help Interprises. I payed my dues, so Back OFF, MAN!!

ES: What's your most favorite memory of Eric?
JW: This one is definetly hard! Actually I think I just thought of one. In fact we have a picture of this. OH! I just thought of another! Ok, here goes. First one, is my, Eric, my brother Justin, his brother Lincoln and sister Laura sitting outside, all on one side of a picnic table, in the middle of the yard watching IN LIVING COLOR on a small TV. Good memory. And there's even a picture of it. Ok, the second is a really long time ago, my parents went some where on a trip and I stayed at my Aunt Dianna and Uncle Steve's (Eric's parents) I got home sick so I slept on the couch. I was sad and couldn't sleep too well. Also, it didn't help that Eric was across the room on the other couch with the flu, pukeing and hacking in a bowl all night. Quite memorable.
